If you do not have a valid ticket yet, buy one from a counter or a
vending machine. You will stay in the inner city (zone 10).
Take tram number 11 (direction Auzelg) to "Buchegg platz"
(sixth stop). Change to bus 69 (direction ETH Hönggerberg) to the
end-point, "ETH Hönggerberg".
Our building (HCI) is the glass-metal building
the bus just passed on the right. It consists of a backbone with five
fingers pointing backwards. Walk under the backbone and enter the
building in the second finger. Go up to the G-floor (two floors up) and
walk all the way to the end of the long corridor. Try room G239 or
G241.
Take the train to Zürich Oerlikon (one stop). Trains are running
several times per hour. The trip takes about 15 min and costs SFr 5.60.-
Buy the ticket from the counter or a vending machine before you board
the train. There is no ticket sale on the train, and without a valid
ticket you will be treated as a fare-dodger. At Oerlikon station,
change to bus 80 (direction Triemlispital; about 8 stops) and get out at
"ETH Hönggerberg". Follow the bus a bit to the glass-matal building
on the left, this is our building. It consists of a backbone with five
fingers. Walk under the backbone and enter the building in the second
finger. Go up to the G-floor (two floors up) and walk all the way to the
end of the long corridor. Try room G239 or G241. Alternatively, you can
also take the train to the main station (Zürich HB) and follow the
directions from there (above) or take a taxi. This costs about Sfr. 50,- and
takes about 30 min.
Key in the postcode (sic) of your destination. 8000 or the blue button,
if present, selects the whole inner city of Zürich, 8058 includes
Zürich airport. They cost SFr 3.80.- and SFr 5.60.-, respectively,
and are valid during a whole hour. If you want a return ticket to your
destination, press the button with the double arrow. This, in fact,
gives you a 24-hour ticket valid for as many trips as you like in the
zones you selected. A 24-hour ticket for Zürich (8000) costs SFr
8.00.- Pay the amount shown after you've made the selection. Vending
machines operate with coins, and some (Zürich airport and HB) also
with 20 SFr notes. All give change. Tickets are generally valid on
everything that moves within the zones you paid for: trams, buses,
trains, S-Bahn (commuter trains), cable cars, boats.
Driving in Zürich is deliberately made as painful as possible. Finding
a parking space is a nightmare, and traffic wardens are numerous, ubiquitous
and frighteningly efficient. The brave buy a city map and try to find their way.
Maps:
Here you can find a map of the city. Alternatively, have a look at www.zuerich.ch or go to the tourist office at the station.
